2. What would your position be on adding fluoride to drinking water and why?
If I was in the positon to make a decision like this I would choose to put fluoride in the drinking water. I would do this because it can strengthen teeth and it would be a healthy amount so it would not affect the body. Not only does it strengthen teeth but it also prevents tooth decay which could help many people in the American society today.I would make sure that the right amount is put in and it cant be harmful to anyone who drinks it, no matter their health conditions. Once all the kinks were worked out I would definately put fluoride in our water.
3. What technological advances in toothpaste had to be made before fluoride could be widely used in toothpaste and mouthwashes?
The trick to making fluoride safe to put in toothpaste is finding it a compatible abrassive. Proctor and Gamble were the first ones to find something compatible with fluoride. They paired stannous fluoride with calcium pyrophosphate. Then another toothpaste company came out with sodium fluoride which was a new crest formula. Although it took these companies a while to find the abrassive compatible for fluoride they did find it.
4. What side effects of using fluoride in drinking water are of most concern to you? Why?
Their are many side affects that worry me about putting fluoride in our drinking water. One of many which was reported by the Journal of the Medical Association. They said that in the cities where most fluoridated water is their is an increasing amount of hip fractures. Know when I get older and have fluoridated water I sure would be mad if something like this caused me my hip. Also when too much fluoride is used it causes discoloring of teeth and decaying of teeth. I want to have my teeth when I grow up. I also want them to be white. My last reason is that when too much fluoride is used not only can it lead to bad teeth but it can lead to illness and death. That is my main reason why fluoride in drinking water is a concern for me. As long as the fluoride levels stay under control than I think none of this will happen to me but if fluoride levels raise in the water I will be really cautious about the amount of water I drink.
